When I was a girl, my mom would prevent me from riding a bike, doing any sport or simply going up and down the stairs too many times because she said my legs would get muscled. I was not to stay too long under the sun because I will get dark. That's why I used to believe that muscles for girls were a bad thing.
I used to aim for a body that is slim and model-like, something that I'll never be. But as I grow up and got into sports, my notion about body image changed drastically. I now prefer the toned, muscled and slightly big built as opposed to the super slim bod. I want to look healthy and fit. I have accepted my body type and am now working on improving it. I now love how I look and feel more than ever.
This article reminds me of society's notion of beauty and how it can make girls conscious of how they look or possibly limit them on what they can achieve. I'm not blaming my mom but I can't help but think how I would have fallen in love with sports earlier if my she was a bit more encouraging.
To quote the article "Think of all the girls who could become top athletes but quit sports because they’re afraid of having too many defined muscles and being made fun of or called unattractive."
I do hope that more parents will encourage their kids to be healthy because really, muscles won't hurt! And they look good on girls. Especially those on the abs area. ;]
